Does it EVER end?

I think I blogged about my dog peeing in Jake's room the other day, and having to clean the carpet. Well she keeps peeing, but in the hallway instead of the bedrooms since she was gated out. Finally she peed on the lino floor, and it was bloody :( So I took her to the only vet that was open today (FYI the super duper expensive one) and it turns out she has a bladder infection, and multiple bladder stones, atleast 3 or 4 that the vet could see on the ultrasound. Today alone cost $189, and they wanted to do another test that was like an add't $90 but I said no (it was to see what kind of bacteria it was for her UTI, but I don't think it matters unless the clavimox doesn't work).

The vet was saying the cost of the surgery is $2000+. There is no chance in hell we can pay that right now, or anytime soon. She seemed to talk badly of the non-surgical method that involves diet change, but from what I've read online, the diet change can work in as little as 7 to 10 days. I'm going to call a couple of places tomorrow (don't ask when, I'm in school all day), and see what they charge for the surgery. My gut instinct is to go with the diet change, but I know it'll cost more to first figure out the kind of stones, and then whatever the food costs, which was looking like $2/lb instead of the $.50/lb we pay now...

Mary, I'm sorry about your dog. I had a similar situation with my cat -- he did exactly what your dog is doing now and he got really sick. Turns out there were crystals in his urine preventing him from peeing and he got a UTI. My vet was fabulous and told me about surgery as an option but also told me that a strict diet change would pretty much eliminate the problem within a week or so. The food I switched to was expensive, yes, but it was better than kitty surgery.

So...I know your dog isn't a cat, LOL, but it sounds very similar to my situation and once I switched Misery to the special food and kept him on it he never had any problems again and he lived on for quite a few more years.

Go with your gut and try the diet first.

Good luck.
