Veni-puncture

Um, no one told me this would be part of my job description, just like they failed to mention having to come in to contact with body fluids and what not.

Today we began IV starts/venipuncture. NO FUN. I hate being touched. I hate having blood taken. I was traumatized when giving birth to Clara and it took them THREE tries to get an IV in. Luckily my partner did it in one try today. But it still hurt. And I'm a wimp.

I'm such a wimp, I almost started crying when I had to do it to another student. Holy Shit. All I could think about was how WRONG this was. I wasn't supposed to causing someone pain, jabbing a needle through their skin. Don't they know who I am? Not the person who's supposed to be armed with a needle. Ugh. But I did it. I had to do a little 'fishing' but got it in, with not too much pain on poor Melanie's part.

One down, four to go. We have to have 5 sucessful sticks, today was in the hand or elbow, using a butterfly needle. Tomorrow we'll use a 21 gauge catheter-over-needle thingy. YAY.

Eek! No way could I do this.

Hey, I saw my xray tech friend today and told her about you. She asked me all these questions I have no idea about (what school, what hospital, what certification/classification). I dunno. She's in school to be an xray tech, that's all I could tell her. LOL

Kath: that's EXACTLY what I was thinking. I handled getting it just fine, but giving it. Eeek

Emily: I didn't thik I could either. I still have 4 more to do.......

Chelle: I don't like needles either, but I was okay before. Now I'm just kind of freaked out

Carrie: You can tell your friend (if you see her again soon :) that I'm in the program down at LBCC, and doing my clinicals at Samaritan Albany hospital. I'll be done next March :)

Shanna: I can handle IV's okay, but it's the whole giving it thing that really bothers me. I'm scared of messing up. Esp. after signing the release form saying you could DIE from getting student IV's. I was more scared about killing someone....
