Tom's grandma (his deceased mother's mom) has lived in the same apartments for somwhere around 30 years now. She just found out that she has until the 9th to move out. Someone bought them and are tearing the complex down. Probably to build some ritzy condos or something. Ruthie doesn't live alone, but with her almost 50 yr old daughter who has (I think) Down's Syndrome (or is mentally retarded, I'm not 100% sure which).
He's trying to talk her to moving down here to Salem for a number of reasons. First of all, it's closer for him to get there. He visits her the most, his cousin sees her a handle of times a year, and that's pretty much it for vistors. Apartments here are cheaper. She's playing $550 a month now, but to find a comparable place in the Portland area that's not too much further from us would be in the $700-$800 range, which would totally stretch her budget thin. Down here there are number of complexs that are in the $500-$600 range that include washer/dryers, or atleast hook-ups. My friend Jamie (from the previous post) manages a complex about 10-15 mins away that has a vacant unit for $505 with w/d hookups. The only downside is that it's an upstairs unit, and Grandma Ruthie is atleast legally blind. She can hardly see anything. Tom is gonna keep looking at places tomorrow.
This is the worst possible time for this to happen. Next weekend Tom is doing the LiveSTRONG ride up in Portland, which will take up all of Sunday. They are doing inventory at worth the following weekend, and the 9th is the Sunday after that. My dad is leaving for DC the 5th, so if we waited until the 8th to do it, he wouldn't be able to help. Plus his co-worker is taking the 3rd-7th off, so he couldn't take any of those days off (there's only 3 of them in his dept.) and he'll have to beg to take any time off the week before inventory. Not to mention I start my program that week, so things will be especially hectic.
Things will have to work out, right?
